I thought that maybe the group would like to see some pictures of Scotland from the 19th and mid 20th centuries. These pictures are of the villages of Redding, Lauriston and the town of Falkirk. All in East Stirlingshire. They are all from the Falkirk Historical Society.
#1 School Road Redding where I lived during WW11. The house that I lived in was the second door on the left. All of the houses had no electricity but were lit by Gas. The street lamps were also gas. My first school was about 100 yards from the house.
# 2 Redding coal mine and Union Canal. There was a bad disaster at this mine in 1923.
#3 Redding Cross Roads, a scene during the mine disaster. The houses on the left were gone when I was a wee boy and during WW11 there were airraid shelters on this site. Now there stands a monument to miers that lost their lies in 1923.
#4 Lauriston Road which was once the main route to Edinburgh from Falkirk and was so until a motorway was constructed in the 1970's. The little cottages on the left were still there before I emigrated to Australia in 1967. The white cottage was at one time the home of my closest friend.
5# Callender Riggs, Falkirk at the east end of town taken from the bus station. I served part of my apprenticeship in electronics in the first shop on the right. Our workshop was in the attic. This area is now a shopping centre
#6 Falkirk High Street towards the west end. Adjacent to this part of town on the right hand side of the picture is the Old Parish Kirk where the graves of Sir John de Graeme and Sir John Stewart who fell at tha battle of Falkirk 1298 are located. The large chimney was at Aitkens brewery which was still in operation before I emigrated. It is now gone and a Supermarket occupies the site.
Hello Andrew, the black and white is good and the descriptions excellent, I doubt we will ever see life at such a slower and more peaceful pace again, Rab.
