Mata Hari, a Dutch-born exotic dancer, was shot in Paris today in 1917, having been found guilty of spying for the Germans. Hari, real name Margaretha Zelle, achieved fame in pre-WWI Paris through her fictional Indian stage character, elevating exotic dancing to a more respectable status. As a result, she was involved with many of the highest-ranking figures in European politics and industry, which would eventually lead to her downfall when the war broke out and personal relationships were scrutinised by both sides.
