GILLIES HILL, BANNOCKBURN

Hello Cameron, I was just in the process of answering this morning's email telling you that I had registered, when my registration was confirmed; so far I have contacted 23 Scottish groups/associations in Australia re Gillies Hill and all are going to support what I have proposed. I will post an update with more information on the Tranter site, I really like this new concept, if it doesn't keep members happy then nothing will, do you intend for this to be the only site we will use?, Regards Rab.

Hi Rab

Great to know that you have done so well with the Gillies Hill fiasco.

I am not sure about just how this facility will be used as people can be unhappy with change. Sure there will be a steep learning curve but the 'Forum' offers a lot.

We will start small and build up.

Thank you for testing out this forum.

Hi Cameron

I have never heard this story of Gillies Hill (or maybe I have forgotten). Anyway it's interresting. The little hill has, on the map, 2 quarries on the the other side seen from Bannockburn, so you can't actually see them from the Heritage Site. I have attaced a picture taken from Stirling Castle. Gillies Hill should be one of the hights in the middle of this.

Toby

Indeed Toby that picture, looking from the castle towards Kings Park and Cambusbarron, is exactly the area involved.

Toby,  Thanks for the excellent picture!  I did get to visit Bannockburn heritage center on my first of three visits to Scotland but I had forgotten about Gillies Hill.  Donna

Rab

You are free to use the picture as you see fit. Or if you want a full size file, I can send it to you.

Hi Rab,Toby, et.al.
A lovely Photograph . If you look to the right upper quartileat about the mid point there is ahouse at the end of a row by a large Tree. That was the home of my Grandfather with whom I lived until aged ten at 39 Main street Cambusbarron. I have spoken to a cousin in Bannockburn apparently the momentum is gathering apace. Great to see the viewagain from the castle esplanade. My family all gathered there to celebrate our heritage once a year (16 April )and afterwards drove to Achallader castle in argyll to remember those Fletchers who fell at Culloden in 1746. Not able to do it now but my sons goto Achallader.on this day to take a white rose .
Kindest Regards
George

Hello George, it was great that Toby had the photo, I was about to ask the group hoping that someboby would have one when Toby read my thoughts and placed it on the site. Support is growing here and emails have already been sent, I am still waiting to get on the radio talkback show I mentioned, however, last week in our major road tunnel there was a multi death accident which caused a fire and that is dominating the media at the moment, it is supposed to re-open today (Tuesday) as I write this. I have purchased a new photo program called Photo Studio and this should allow me to focus in on your home or former home as it is much more advanced than the program i was using, Regards Rab.
